Exclusive Interview with Haj. Aisha: My Journey into Kannywood, Challenges, Success, and Future Dreams

Can you tell the readers a little bit about your background?
I am a Fulani (Hausa Fulani), my father is a Fulani from Adamawa. My mother is also a Fulani from Gombe, but we grew up in Kano. I did secondary school JSS 3, I did not go to SS1, but we did religious studies fairly well. I was married and have five children, three boys and two girls.
What attracted you to get involved in the Kannywood industry?
I am a fan of Hausa movies, and I am fascinated by it.
How old would you say you were when you started acting?
I would say about ten years.
How was your struggle to get into the industry?
Well, initially I didn’t start with films, I was with musicians, I did some political work and I knew musicians very well before I knew filmmakers, because we had a lot of political discussions with people, so we ended up working with musicians.
And I got into the ‘Industry’ through the late musician Rabi Mustapha, may God have mercy on her, she was my friend, she brought me into the ‘industry’ and put me in the hands of Ghali Dizet Abdallah.
It turned out that I knew all the musicians before I knew the filmmakers. Later on, as I progressed, people kept telling me to do films, so I got interested in it and got involved in the film industry.
The first person who introduced me to the film industry was Lawan Ahmad, because he was like a friend to me, we were very close friends, so he brought me into the film industry. But he didn’t do the first film for me.
The company ‘Kamfa Mobies’ was the first to introduce me, Uncle Kamfa Mobie is my son and I treated him like a brother, he treated me like a mother, he would say, “Mommy, I will put you in a film”, I said, “Can I?” He said, “Can you?”
When he was going to do his film from his company ‘Kamfa Mobies’ Gudu A Duhu, he said I will put you in it.
Speaking of parents or siblings, when you would tell them that you were interested in starting a film, did you get any challenge from them or not?
By God, I don’t have any problems with them, in fact when I came to tell my father, he had a good understanding with me and said it doesn’t matter, since it is a profession, if I go and do my profession.
And my father’s and mother’s brothers and sisters never gave me any trouble and supported me 100 percent, even when my mother was not alive.
How was the beginning?
You have to do things you have never done before, you have to do things you can’t do, you have to be patient and be shown.
You will always feel like people are criticizing you or fighting you, it’s not fighting, they are telling you the truth so you can improve.
But it was a struggle.
Which movie did you start with?
Gudu A Duhu, in which I appeared as Ali Nuhu’s mother-in-law, and I appeared as Maryam Babban Yaro’s mother, then I did my second movie ‘Baya da Kura’, and then I came and did ‘Abbana’.
From the time you started until now, how many movies have you done?
Well, it would be about five or seven.
Of the movies you have appeared in, which one was your favorite?
Izzar So, that was the movie that everyone knew me better than at that time, wherever I went, my wife Haj. Habiba.
What kind of achievements have you achieved in film?
Alhamdulillah Ala kulli halin, I am Haj. Aisha I am proud of the film industry, not because if you live in your neighborhood no one knows you, but because of the film industry when you go out to your neighbors they are also interested in seeing them talk to you, or they show the world that they know you.
Even those who are around don’t know you, your brothers are also proud and want to hear who our sister is or who we know, Alhamdulillah.
Because of the success that has been achieved, what a lot and progress, wherever a person goes, he is honored, there are many things that I am not worthy of doing, but the value of film and the glory that God has given to a person is that you go out and do things without wasting time, without suffering.
I think this is also a great success.
Have you ever faced any challenges in the film industry or in the industry?
I have never seen a challenge that was a problem for me, or even a problem that bothered me.
Because I know that all a person seeks is if he sees a small problem that he does not want to face, he should consider it a step towards success, and God will give him luck.
What has ever happened to you that made you happy or otherwise that you will never forget in life?
There are many things, first of all, like when you go to a city or go into the community and interact with them, you see how the community welcomes you, because of love and affection.
This makes me happy and entertained, and where you go and think you are not good enough, you see that you are good enough.
Do you have a mentor in the Kannywood industry?
Seriously, I have real parents, not just one boss, parents, they are many that will not fail.
Did you refuse to take a film from your side?
I took up film as a profession, and I decided to protect my honor and that of my parents, and Alhamdulillah, I am doing my best.
Even though in this worldly life you can treat someone right, and you can’t treat someone right, no one can do it except Allah.
What is your future dream about film?
If Allah wills, I have a dream of becoming a producer, because I have been making my own films.
Even if Allah brings me a husband and I get married, I will still do it at home.
What about marriage?
Most women in the Kannywood industry face challenges from people who don’t understand us about marriage.
Some people think that we are doing it for fun or that it is not important, even though marriage is a time and it comes, whenever God wills a woman to get married, no matter how much she loves the ‘Industry’, when the time comes, she will get married.
But it is not for nothing, most of the time, you will see in ten percent of the people who will say that they love us, we filmmakers are eight or nine percent, it is not the love of God and the Prophet, it is not the love of marriage.
It is just the love of lust that we are seen in films, because we are loved.
And when a person gets married, he faces challenges and after two or three days, the woman goes to the husband’s house and dies.
Then we are associated with saying that we filmmakers do not want to get married, it is not that we do not want to get married.
Is there a film that you have appeared in, later you were surprised to appear in it?
There are movies that I really like, but I didn’t feel like appearing in them, there are many that I am proud of, none that I felt like appearing in.
Because the roles that are given to me are almost the ones that I want, and I am proud of it.
Which movie has ever made you happy, and why?
There are many; Abban, the kind of role that was given to me, I felt very happy how I was appearing without feeling well, how Aisha Aliyu Tsamiya showed that after my death her father loved her, this movie I still watch tomorrow and enjoy it.
Then Hauwa Kulu, we are poor, my daughter and I and her father came and died, the way she was humiliated as a daughter and was raped, this movie always touches my heart, it’s not a big deal that we have children especially the daughter, her dignity and honor when it is touched on her, it makes me sad.
I love the movie but the movie always makes me cry with pity.
Then Izzar So, I love Izzar So, because when I play the role of Izzar So, I feel very happy when I come out and act.
It makes me feel calm because I respect my husband Ali Nuhu, I respect him as the wise woman in his house.
Then I love Labarina, especially because I play the role of Aliyu’s father’s wife, I feel happy.
Are there any problems in the Kannywood industry that you think should be fixed?
We will not say that we do not have problems, we do have problems, wherever it is said that people are gathered, they are six, ten, and more, you have to find a person with the kind of character and heart that God has made him.
What hurts me is that a problem will happen to your brother, you will go and explain to the media for the world to see, you will expose him, or you will say what he did that was not good.
Why, as his brother, you drag him and call him ho, show him what he is not supposed to do, stop. Then you go and tell the world.
And if you tell the world, they will see that we have become one mother and one father, they will see that we have become disunited. We are eating each other’s world, we are challenging each other.
We should be patient with each other, we have already become one broom, one rope.
Everyone has their own way of life, but if you know a person’s character, you can learn how to live with them, let’s be kind to each other, because there is nothing we cannot achieve as long as we love each other.
This industry of ours is an industry full of goodness and blessings, full of wealth that God has given us.
Even today, if a person comes, if God writes a person has a destiny in it, God will provide for him in it and he will get what he never expected.
For example, if you become a leader, what kind of progress do you think you will bring to the Kannywood industry?
Leadership is difficult, God will make us hold the truth, no matter how bitter it is or how angry we may be, let’s come out and do something between us and God and tell the truth, even though the world has changed now, we must have supporters.
After movies, do you have another profession?
Yes! I have a profession that I started with, I am in the food industry, because I have a ‘Restaurant’.
But now, I am still in the food business, every gathering, celebration, or political gathering, if there is a need for traditional or modern Western food, I do it, I accept contracts and serve people until the next day.
What is your relationship with the other actors, and those you were with before you started filming?
It is a good relationship, since I have been with them, we have never fought, when we meet we respect each other and greet each other, we joke and laugh.
If something happens that makes me happy or sad, I will go, and if I hear about it, I will come to me.
We are friends and we have a good relationship.
The same goes for those before I entered the film industry, those I was with, we continue our friendship, except for the excuses they give me about things that will happen, I will not go, because I do not have time for myself, but later you go and make someone happy or sad.
Are there any people you would like to greet?
My brothers and my colleagues, all of whom I am proud of, my viewers and colleagues.
I am proud of our producers and directors for the way they believe that we are doing what they want, to the point that they ask us to include us in their work.
Viewers, may God reward us well, if we make a mistake, help us correct ourselves because we are wrong.
I wish us well, may God grant us health and well-being, and give us good leaders.
LEADE, may God grant them good health, may God make this thing they are doing reach the desired goal.
May God give them more confidence and effort in how they all think that they will try, we heroes should ask us about our worries or problems, let us tell them and tell the world so that they can understand us better.
I wish you well, thank you.
