Gidan Badamasi Returns: Why the Popular Hausa Comedy Series Is Back

The Hausa comedy series Gidan Badamasi is one of the most popular comedy films in the Hausa language in recent years.

Over the years, Hausa filmmakers have been accused of focusing exclusively on love stories, neglecting other aspects.

Why the Series Continued

The director of the series, a long-time producer, Falalu Ɗorayi, said they decided to continue the series because they hoped it would continue to lift the spirits of viewers at a time when many countries are struggling with economic hardship.

The new season of the series has already begun airing, which has attracted attention on social media, given how the series captured the attention of viewers during its run.

The series was announced to be over after the sixth season, but Falalu said they returned to work because of the demands of viewers.

“I Miss the Show” — Viewers React

In an interview with the BBC, Falalu Dorayi said,
“We have seen how much viewers miss it, and they are showing that there is a gap in the Kannywood industry,” he said.

The director added that Gidan Badamasi is a show that can bring families — grandparents, parents, children and grandchildren — together at least without any fear or worry of seeing something inappropriate.

Messages Behind the Comedy

Regarding the messages the show carries, Falalu said,
“they include highlighting the rights of parents over their children, the rights of a father over his children, betrayal and love of material things, and we, as parents, deliver the message through humor and entertainment.”

Falalu added that given the current situation in Nigeria,
“there is a need for films that are entertaining and humorous.

“And the show Gidan Badamasi plays a role in this field by removing loneliness and instilling happiness in the hearts of people.”

“It is a show that touches every aspect of life,” said Dorayi.

Addressing Social Issues

However, the director said that apart from comedy, this time the show will touch on the problems facing the community in northern Nigeria such as kidnapping.

“Nowadays, security is almost the biggest concern for Nigerians, that is why we brought in the issue of kidnapping, where Alhaji Badamasi was kidnapped for his money.”

Research and Realism

Falalu said they had to conduct extensive research on how to deal with kidnapping,
“so that we can convey the message wisely and skillfully,” he said.

“We have done a lot of research on kidnapping after the research and analysis we did.

“We also came up with something on the issue of ethnicity in the movement, and also came up with what to do if someone is arrested and ways to address security issues.”
